Sikeres sebészorvos apja nyomdokait követve a Yale Egyetem orvosi fakultására készült, előbb azonban a haditengerészetnél töltötte katonai szolgálatát. Itt „szerezte” jellegzetes mosolyát: dulakodás közben arcul ütötték, a felső ajkán maradt forradás miatt csak az alsó ajka tudott mosolyra húzódni.</span><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><span style="color:#48484a;display:block;font-family:nerislight;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;margin-bottom:19px;text-align:left;">Leszerelése után több szakmában is kipróbálta magát, 1920-ban lépett először színpadra és 1935-ig tucatnyi Broadway-produkcióban szerepelt. A kamera elé 1928-ban állt először, két évvel később a <em>Felfelé a folyón</em> című filmben már főszerepet osztottak rá. A Warner Stúdió heti 550 dolláros fizetéssel gengszterszerepekre szerződtette, visszaemlékezése szerint „első 34 filmemben 12 alkalommal gyilkoltak meg, 12 alkalommal végeztek ki, 9 alkalommal szöktem meg a börtönből, több jelenetet játszottam a földön, haldokolva, mint a lábamon állva.”</span></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><span style="color:#48484a;display:block;font-family:nerislight;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;margin-bottom:19px;text-align:left;">A férfias megjelenésű, hideg tekintetű színész számára a negyvenes évek hozták meg az áttörést: bár a <em>Magas Sierra</em> című filmben ismét gengsztert játszott, ezúttal sikerült a közönség rokonszenvét elnyernie – talán mert az egyik forgatókönyvíró a legjobb barátja, John Huston rendező volt, aki aztán többször instruálta. „Bogie” (becenevét színészbarátjától, Spencer Tracytől kapta) 1941-ben <em>A máltai sólyom</em>mal lett igazi sztár, az egyik első nagy film-noirban magánnyomozót alakított, akárcsak a <em>Hosszú álom</em> és a <em>Gyanúba keveredve</em> című alkotásokban is. Érdekesség, hogy a Raymond Chandler regényéből született <em>Hosszú álom</em> forgatókönyvének egyik társszerzője a későbbi irodalmi Nobel-díjas William Faulkner volt. E filmekben mindig akadt egy csinos nő, aki beleszeretett az ellenállhatatlan mosolyú főhősbe, vagy éppen akadályokat próbált gördíteni az összekuszált szálak kibogozása elé.</span></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><span style="color:#48484a;display:block;font-family:nerislight;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;margin-bottom:19px;text-align:left;">A filmtörténetbe Bogart az 1942-es <em>Casablancá</em>val írta be végleg a nevét. A Kertész Mihály által rendezett fekete-fehér háborús románc mindent felvonultatott, ami a sikerhez kell: melodrámát, félelmet, romantikus szerelmet, háborút, vígjátéki elemeket és zenét. A <em>Casablancá</em>t minden idők legjobb filmjei között emlegetik, megválasztották a legjobb szerelmi történetnek, vezeti a filmes szállóigék és a legemlékezetesebb csókok listáját, más filmesek (a többi közt Woody Allen) is idézik. </span></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/oldfiles/Casablanca.jpg"></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><strong>Ingrid Bergmannal a <em>Casablanca</em> című filmben</strong></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><span style="color:#48484a;display:block;font-family:nerislight;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;margin-bottom:19px;text-align:left;">A filmnek nemcsak rendezője volt magyar, hanem két magyar színész is játszott benne: a hamis útlevelekkel üzletelő Peter Lorre, azaz Lőrincz Péter és főpincérként Szőke Szakáll, azaz Gerő Jenő, a stáblistán S. K. Sakall néven. A forgatáson végig ügyelni kellett arra, hogy ne látszódjék: Ingrid Bergman, aki először nemet mondott a szerepre, magasabb partnerénél. A két főszereplő a való életben nem szívlelte egymást, a vásznon azonban tökéletes párost alkottak, olyannyira, hogy Bogart soros felesége is féltékeny lett. A <em>Casablanca </em>a nyolc Oscar-jelölésből a legjobb film, rendezés és forgatókönyv díját kapta meg, Bogart azonban üres kézzel távozott a gáláról.</span></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"> </p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><span style="color:#48484a;display:block;font-family:nerislight;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;margin-bottom:19px;text-align:left;">Korda Zoltánnal háborús filmet forgatott (<em>Szahara</em>), a Hemingway nyomán készült <em>Szegények és gazdagok</em>ban (Martinique) a nála huszonöt évvel fiatalabb, 19 éves Lauren Bacall volt a partnere. Egymásba szerettek, összeházasodtak, az addig nőcsábász és az alkoholt sem megvető színész élete negyedik felesége oldalán rendeződött, sőt, közel az ötvenhez apa is lett. Gúnyosnak vagy cinikusnak mondott mosolya, szigorú, mégis szomorú tekintete, az állandóan szája sarkában fityegő „mezítlábas” (Chesterfield) cigaretta, elegáns testtartása, elmaradhatatlan ballonkabátja és kalapja egy korszak ideáljává tette.</span></p><p style="font-family:nerislight;color:#48484a;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;text-align:left;margin-bottom:19px;display:block;"><span style="color:#48484a;display:block;font-family:nerislight;font-size:16px;line-height:20px;margin-bottom:19px;text-align:left;">1997-ben bélyeget adtak ki tiszteletére, 1999-ben az Amerikai Filmintézet minden idők legjobb amerikai színészének nevezte, és posztumusz csillagot kapott a Hírességek sétányán. 2006-ban New Yorkban utcát neveztek el róla. Nevét a Bon Jovi együttes és Suzanne Vega is dalba foglalta, hét filmje került be a Kongresszusi Könyvtár Nemzeti Filmregiszterébe.
