Az angyalka pénztárcájának feneketlennek kell lennie! Másképp hogyan is tudna annyi szép dolgot minden gyereknek – vagyis majdnem mindegyiknek – a karácsonyfa alá varázsolni, ha nem lenne végtelen mennyiségű kincs a tárcájában? De akkor miért van az, hogy sok helyen nincs ajándék a fa alatt, sőt még karácsonyfa sem díszeleg a ház melegében? Vagy azt miért engedi meg az angyalka, hogy helyenként az otthonnak melege se legyen, de sokaknak talán még olyan helyük se, amit otthonnak nevezhetnek? Az angyalka róluk megfeledkezett volna?

Látod, már meg is kezdted. Mulatsz a dolgon, de akár hiszed, akár nem, nekem lesz igazam. Ugye, már azt is megnézted, hogy ki írta? Ebben egész biztos vagyok, ugyanis manapság ez a szokás: egy pillantás a címre, s abban az esetben, ha ez nem sejteti, hogy ismét a Vatráról lesz benne szó vagy a márciusi eseményekről, következik a név, a cikk írójának neve. És ha az embernek nem adatik meg, hogy közismerten vadul cikkező igaz magyar legyen, s még csak nem is fiatal mártírjelölt, marad a kihívó felszólítás, meg egy fogadás, amelynek elvesztése, azt hiszem, most már minden olvasó számára nyilvánvaló. Nem árulok zsákbamacskát, előre közlöm, hogy cikkemben nem fogom senkinek sem kikaparni a szemét, amiért esetleg más véleménye van, mint nekem; Erdély problémáját sem akarom most mindjárt megoldani. (Ezzel legalább tízezer olvasót elvesztettem, ami ideális erkölcsi körülmények között félmillió lej.) Csupán azt fogom bebizonyítani... de ezt talán majd később. Az ember nagyon kíváncsi lény, és egyedüllétében sohasem úgy viselkedik, mint amikor látják. Mert ha mi ketten, te meg én, ezt a fogadást nyilvánosság előtt kötjük, hozzá sem fogsz az olvasáshoz, zsebre teszed a pénzt, és jót röhögsz a markodba. Így viszont, hogy semmi sem kötelez a fogadás betartására, nyugodtan olvasod a cikket, noha tudod, hogy veszteni fogsz, hogy becsapsz egy embert. Mi lenne például, ha nem hagynám magam, s elmennék minden előfizetőhöz, azt mondván: „Jó napot kívánok, Sz. M. vagyok, jöttem, hogy adja meg a tartozását, ugyanis a múltkori számban elolvasta a cikkemet.” Rögtön elpirulnál, és azt válaszolnád: „Kérem, nem tudom, miről beszél, én semmilyen cikket nem olvastam öntől” vagy. „Vesztett, uram, hisz én az első mondat után letettem a cikkét”. Rögtön mindnyájan elfelejtenétek, milyen jóízűen kinevettetek. S még valami: ha nem pirítottam volna rá az emberekre, ha nem elemeztem volna ilyen komolyan a magatartásukat, holnap mindenki az én cikkemről beszélne az utcán. (A vita lehetőségét teljesen kizártam, mert egy válaszcikk megjelenése egyértelműen tanúskodnék írója becstelenségéről. Ötven lejért viszont lehet vitázni!) De ezek után ki fogja ezt mondani az utcán megállított ismerősének: „Ugye, te is kitoltál azzal a pasassal? Te is elolvastad a cikkét, s mégsem adtad meg a tartozásodat?!” Mert ha ezt a kérdést feltennék az emberek, bizony sok-sok botrány lenne kilátásban: kiderülne, hogy a legjobb barátok is hazudnak egymásnak, hogy színészkednek az őszinte emberek. Talán csak két szerelmes mondaná, egymás szemének tükrében keresve az örökkévalóságot: „Igen, drágám, én is csaltam.” Ugye, nem nézted meg az órádat, mennyi időt rabolt el röpke életedből ennek a cikknek az elolvasása? Megmondom én: két-három percet. Vagyis nagyjából annyi időt, amennyit egy Rilke-vers elolvasása igényel. (A világ összmagyarságától bocsánatot kérek, hogy most éppen nem Petőfi járt az eszemben. Egyébként szokott ő is.) Naponta hány olyan cikket olvasol el, amelyből nem sokkal többet tudsz meg, mint ebből?
